Invisible braces come in more options than just the always-popular Invisalign. Today, brace systems of all kinds have become much more discreet, letting people of all ages and all orthodontic issues get a system with which they can feel confident. Of course, you always have the option for Invisalign, too! Here are the two “invisible” options available to orthodontic patients!

Ceramic Braces

Ceramic braces use clear or coloured brackets rather than the metallic silver of conventional brackets and wires. Because of this, ceramic options are less noticeable on the teeth than metal braces, an advantage for those who need braces but don’t want to feel self-conscious about them.

The care plans and treatment time are the same as metallic braces, and both options use brackets, wires and sometimes elastics. Also, like metal braces, the patient can’t remove ceramic brackets until the treatment is complete. However, the clear or tooth-coloured brackets of ceramic braces blend in with the teeth, helping patients wary of orthodontic work embrace their braces!

Ceramic braces use composite materials that are weaker and more brittle than their metal counterpart, and because the self-ligating brackets are white or clear, they can stain. However, staining is not a problem for most patients, as we change the brackets when they need an adjustment, usually every month.

Invisalign

bracesOf course, one very invisible option is Invisalign, and it’s the best option for those who want to straighten their teeth without anyone knowing they are doing so. These clear aligners are almost invisible on the teeth, as they are made of a patented thermoplastic material called SmartTrack®. The customized aligner trays, made using moulds taken by your orthodontist, gradually shift the teeth. As you make progress, new trays come to match the new positions.

Clear aligners require a lot of responsibility on the part of the patient; they must be worn 22 hours a day and removed every time you eat or drink anything other than water. However, because they’re almost undetectable and much less obtrusive than conventional options, Invisalign is a desirable option for patients of all ages!
