Common Orthodontic Issues & Causes

Posted Feb 5th, 2025

Orthodontic issues are typically related to the alignment of teeth and jaws. Here are some of the most common orthodontic problems:

Crowding

  • Description: Occurs when there isn't enough space in the mouth to fit all the teeth properly, causing them to overlap or shift.
  • Cause: Genetics, early loss of baby teeth, or tooth eruption issues.

Spacing (Diastema)

  • Description: Gaps or spaces between teeth, often between the upper front teeth.
  • Cause: Small teeth, large jaw, or missing teeth.

Overbite

  • Description: When the upper teeth overlap significantly over the lower teeth. This can cause difficulty in chewing and lead to wear on the teeth.
  • Cause: Genetics, thumb sucking, or prolonged use of a pacifier.

Underbite

  • Description: When the lower teeth protrude beyond the upper teeth, causing the lower jaw to be more prominent than the upper jaw.
  • Cause: Genetics, abnormal development of the jaw, or habits like thumb sucking.

Crossbite

  • Description: Occurs when one or more of the upper teeth bite on the inside of the lower teeth, which can cause tooth wear, gum disease, or bone loss.
  • Cause: Misalignment of the upper and lower jaws.

Open Bite

  • Description: When the upper and lower teeth don't come together properly, leaving an open space, especially when the back teeth are together.
  • Cause: Thumb sucking, tongue thrusting, or abnormal jaw growth.

Overjet

  • Description: When the upper teeth stick out too far beyond the lower teeth horizontally.
  • Cause: Genetics, thumb sucking, or an issue with the development of the jaw.

These orthodontic issues can affect both the function of the teeth and overall oral health.

Treatment options typically include braces, clear aligners, retainers, or, in some cases, surgical intervention, depending on the severity of the issue. Our orthodontists can help determine the best approach for each individual case.
