Invisalign is increasing in popularity among orthodontic patients young and old. It seems like clear plastic trays such as Invisalign, are the new wires. Have you asked yourself, what can Invisalign do differently than traditional metal braces? Could Invisalign’s clear aligners one day replace the metal wires and brackets of the past?
Let’s Be Transparent! (Literally)
For most, the most appealing feature of Invisalign is its relative invisibility. After making sure your mouth is free of foreign food particles, you simply slide the clear aligners on and proceed with your day as usual, without many noticing. As long as you stay on top of brushing and flossing between meals and wear the aligners for the recommended hours during the day, the transparent trays will bring your teeth into alignment throughout your day and night.
How Does Invisalign Work?
Invisalign is considered a relatively painless treatment. Traditional braces with wires need to be adjusted at regular appointments and can cause slight discomfort for some. The brackets can cause irritation to your cheeks and tongue while you get use to them. The clear aligners offered with Invisalign treatment reduce the irritation to your cheeks and tongue, but may also have an adjustment period. Invisalign trays should be worn 22 hours a day to fully benefit from treatment and will be changed every couple of weeks as prescribed by our doctors sometimes requiring less in-office visits.
In some cases, our orthodontist may place small metallic or plaster attachments on some of your teeth. If a tooth needs to be rotated, these attachments allow the liners to grip your teeth and bring them more effectively into alignment. In some cases, tiny elastic bands may be applied to the attachments for some added movement. Not all patients require elastics or attachments, each case is truly customized.
Is Invisalign Better?
Both traditional braces and Invisalign have pros and cons. Not everyone is a candidate for Invisalign treatment, but as the technology changes, new techniques and corrections can be done.
