How Long Does Invisalign Really Take?

Posted Dec 7th, 2020

The Invisalign process is one of the biggest advancements in orthodontic treatment. With less work and upkeep than traditional metal and ceramic braces, the clear, BPA-free plastic aligners used in Invisalign treatment offer more flexibility and discretion. This is ideal for those who need to have their teeth aligned but are self-conscious about the look of braces.

It sounds too good to be true: a moulded piece of plastic moving your teeth into their correct position? Don’t worry, Invisalign really does work, and millions of people have used it to straighten their smiles! But how long does the process take?

How Long Does Orthodontic Treatment With Invisalign Take?

The length of treatment depends on multiple factors, such as the complexity of your case, how often you wear the aligners, etc. Your orthodontist will determine how long you can expect the treatment to take based on your needs.

On average, Invisalign treatment time is 12 to 18 months, and the results can start to show in only a few weeks. When compared to the average length of time for traditional braces – 18 months to three years – Invisalign treatment doesn’t seem that long! The more consistent you are with your treatment – wearing them for the recommended 20 to 22 hours a day, changing the aligners weekly or every other week, etc. – the faster your results will be.

If you choose Invisalign treatment, your new aligners suitable for the next phase in how your teeth move will come to you; there’s no need to come to your orthodontist every week. However, your doctor will schedule check-ups about once every four to six weeks. The goal of these appointments is to make sure that your Invisalign treatment is advancing as it should. Luckily for the patient, Invisalign is one of the least intrusive treatment options available!

How Does Invisalign Work So Well?

One of the reasons our patients choose Invisalign, if it fits their needs, is that the aligners are practically invisible. Even still, the treatment is very effective at using a gentle, constant force to move your teeth where they should be. While they’re going to work, the people around you may never even notice you’re wearing aligners at all. Invisalign treatment makes for a seamless fit!

Some people do feel temporary discomfort for the first few days of wearing a new set of aligners. Many patients describe the feeling as light pressure, and this is normal – it’s actually a positive sign that your Invisalign aligners are working.

Everyone has a one-of-a-kind smile, so every Invisalign treatment begins with a consultation. During your consultation, your orthodontist will determine how the Invisalign treatment can help align your teeth. While our practice can’t guarantee a particular treatment outcome, we want to hear your teeth alignment goals during this consultation stage. We want you to feel comfortable in our hands!
